Use Mediators and Police as Conflict Resolution Partners

In July 2020, Woody published an article urging the use of community mediator to work as partners with police officers. The following comment from Talin Bahadarian, an experienced trainer of police to use mediators (whose husband was a police officer) underscores the importance of Woody's policy recommendation as an alternative to “defunding” the police.

Talin BahadarianI want to thank you for your article at Mediate.com. It was a refreshing perspective. My appreciation was enhanced by the fact that my husband has been a LA County Deputy Sheriff for 21 years. Although he is now a detective in the counter-terrorism unit with the FBI, he patrolled the streets of Carson, CA for many years. During those years patrolling, he worked to affect true change in the community in which he policed. He was compassionate and kind and often came home sharing about how he had counseled at-risk youth, often at the behest of concerned mothers. I completely agree that training officers and enlisting their help, versus demonizing them, is the key.

I'm passionate to bring peace through mediation to the police community. It has been my joy and privilege these last 15 years to work with Western Justice Center, the LA City Attorney's Office and the LAPD to train police officers on how to be effective mediators in the communities in which they serve. Engaging them is the answer! Thank you again for your article encouraging our community in this direction.
